10 Status Updates On Famous Horror Franchises

3. Friday The 13th

Freddy Krueger
Paramount Pictures

Last Entry: Friday the 13th (2009)

After launching in 1980, the Friday the 13th franchise had little struggle getting a new entry into theaters until after the ninth entry, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, released in 1993. It took almost a decade before Jason Voorhees returned to theaters via Jason X in 2002, a film essentially made to tide fans over who had been waiting to see the big crossover event, Freddy vs. Jason, in 2003.

That film marked the end of both the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises as we know them, and it took a further six years before Jason returned, this time in a 2009 reboot.

Though that film was a financial success, a sequel has since failed to materialize, the on/off nature of its production eventually giving way to another reboot opportunity that was scheduled for October 13th of this year before, yet again, the project was cancelled.

On top of that, The CW had flirted for several years with bringing the franchise to their network as a series, but last year announced that that would not be happening, either. As of now, the big and small screen future of the franchise is up in the air for the foreseeable future, leaving fans to revisit past films (or even IllFonic's crowdfunded video game released several months ago) if they want to get their Jason fix.
