10 Supporting Movie Characters Who Deserve Their Own Film

6. Carson Clay - Mr Bean's Holiday

One of the most unfairly maligned films in recent years, Mr. Bean's Holiday is a throwback family comedy with genuine laughs, charm by the bucket, and a hilarious supporting role for Willem Dafoe.

As pretentious director Carson Clay, he channels his intensity into a ludicrous filmmaker character driven to distraction by the titular English nuisance. The highlight of the movie, climaxing at the Cannes film festival, is the brief glimpse we get of Carson’s creation, a great arthouse parody.

Dafoe has proved his ability with comedy before and since - most recently his maniacal turn in The Lighthouse - and deserves more opportunities to head up films. His filmography doesn’t tend to lean towards the family friendly, so perhaps a Carson Clay vehicle would remove the character from the Bean Extended Universe altogether.

Hollywood always has a fondness for making movies about making movies, and in Dafoe and Carson Clay they have a ready made actor/character combo. The Bean mark of quality may not mean too much these days, but the film and the character deserve reappraisal.
