Had James Gunn not been fired by Disney, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would have been released this year. While he has since been re-hired by the studio, the director is busy finishing work on The Suicide Squad, and that means Thor: Love and Thunder is now coming before this team's next big screen adventure.

As you'll no doubt remember, Avengers: Endgame wrapped up with Thor setting off into outer space with the "Asgardians of the Galaxy," and Groot voice actor Vin Diesel has now confirmed that the Guardians will return in Taika Waititi's threequel next year.

Marvel Studios won't be happy with the actor dropping that bombshell, but this either means the team will play a prominent role in the God of Thunder's next solo adventure or that he'll leave them fairly early on (thereby leaving room in the film for the spotlight to remain on Thor and newer characters like Jane Foster's Mighty Thor and Valkyrie).

Most fans assumed that Love and Thunder would just kick off with Thor having left the Guardians, so Waititi getting his hands on them before Gunn is definitely unexpected.
