10 Terrible Horror Movies That Are Actually Awesome
3. The Ruins (2008)
2008's taut horror The Ruins was a box office bomb and a critical failure across the board, but time has made it a solid little thriller which soars with its ensemble cast and effective tension.
Based on the novel of the same name by screenwriter Scott Smith, the film follows a group of tourist who encounter a hidden evil while taking part in an archaeological dig in Mexico.
Thanks to its brisk pace and brief but brutal violence, The Ruins simple take on the cult horror subgenre is neither original nor unpredictable, but remains an exciting gem due to its confident execution, intriguing mystery, and the performances of stars of Jena Malone and Shawn Ashmore.
If you do seek it out, though, make sure to watch the extended version, which features a horrifying ending far superior to the theatrical cut.
