Whilst it can be found on Netflix, The Invitation isn’t a typical low-budget horror romp to stick on for a cheap scare or to ogle at some gore. The premise of a man and his new girlfriend attending a dinner party at his ex’s house sounds either like my own personal nightmare, a cheesy and depressing new Meet the Parents sequel, or a paint-by-numbers formula to a torture porn palooza. But this unsettling, artistic movie is so much more.

The stellar acting once again from Logan Marshall-Green, who now closely resembles Tom Hardy’s hobo-looking cousin, really helps this film. Through his eyes, The Invitation explores themes of paranoia, guilt, grief and so much more. Meanwhile, a contrasting, upbeat cast creates genuine tension as the slow burn of the movie moves closer and closer and closer towards an assumed and feared marvelous explosion.

Also, for those of a weak disposition who like to hide behind their partners during any suspected jump scares (totally not speaking from experience), then good news! The Invitation has very little if any jump scares, choosing instead to craft unbearable tension through the crescendo of music and eerie silences. Once again, a twist befitting of Shyamalan in his prime leaves a lasting feeling of uneasiness as the credits roll, as only the best horror movies can.
