3. Overhaul The Oscars

The Oscars don't work anymore and I'm not even sure if they ever worked to begin with. To start off with, the entire red carpet thing should be eliminated. The Oscars are supposed to be a celebration of movies, not a celebration of Hollywood celebrity and excess. Next, cut the length of the ceremony in half - there really isn't even a need for host, at least not the way they do it now. The focus of the show should be on the actual awards with everything else secondary. There needs to be a little entertainment during the show, but it shouldn't be the focus. Lastly, the people who pick the actual awards need to be changed. The winner for Best Picture is almost never the movie that is actually regarded as the best movie that year. The Academy generally goes for the same 5 or 6 standard, well-executed dramas with 1 or 2 foreign/independent films that stand no chance of winning. The Academy needs to diversify and present a real set of the best movies of the year to choose a winner from. The Academy needs to recognize more foreign and independent films and even a blockbuster every once in while if it merits it. Finally stop inviting people that have nothing to do with movies (Justin Bieber, Michelle Obama) to present awards.
