10 Things That Almost Completely Changed Spider-Man: Far From Home
5. No Fishbowl
When Mysterio was announced to play a prominent role in Far From Home, there was one question that every Spider-Man fan had about the character's design: would the live action take on the character maintain his classic costume complete with fishbowl helmet? (And, if so, would audiences be able to take someone with that look at all seriously as the movie's primary antagonist?)
Certainly that latter question seems to have been a subject for concern for Marvel as the Master of Illusion's costume went through a vast variety of iterations before settling on the classic look.
Ryan Meinerding, Marvel's Head of Visual Development, recently revealed that there had been over sixty different designs for Mysterio's costume, many straying far further from the comics than the one that we eventually saw, with shorter capes, less ball-shaped helmets and more prominent use of an eye logo.
A lot of the more serious looking designs replaced the fishbowl with a more sleek, skull-shaped helmet with a layered, translucent and lit-up effect that resembles nothing so much as the title character from the Batman: Arkham Knight game.
This generic look would have been fine and certainly wouldn't have ruined the movie, but the decision to give Mysterio his classic style was probably the right one. It gives him a little more personality, having a unique, and slightly over-the-top design. It plays into the vanity and showmanship of the character comics readers love, even if his backstory is a little different here.
