3. Edward Scissorhands' Costume Was Made With Fabric From An Old Sofa
Costume designer Colleen Atwood took inspiration from an eclectic variety of sources when conceptualising the costume of Edward Scissorhands. The blade-handed humanoid's look was created using things like pieces of old machinery, vinyl and tape. Parts of an old sofa taken from director Tim Burton's first apartment were even incorporated into the outfit!
Edward Scissorhands' appearance is also influenced by a diverse mix of people, including The Cure's Robert Smith, Charlie Chaplin and Frankenstein's monster. Interestingly, physical similarities between the film's director Tim Burton and Edwards Scissorhands are often noted as well.
As Edward Scissorhands' suit contained a lot of leather and the film was shot in sunny Florida, the costume caused Depp significant discomfort. Therefore, a cool suit was designed for the actor which he wore beneath the outfit, and special fans were strategically placed offstage to help his body temperature readjust between takes.
