10 Times Marvel Movies Negatively Influenced The Comics
5. Iron Man And The Guardians Of The Galaxy's Drastic Personality Changes
Sometimes, an adaptation may veer far from the source material and still work despite not hewing close to the latter's specific traits. This was certainly the case when the MCU brought Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy to life in 2008 and 2014, respectively.
Both franchises received a healthy dose of dry but ultimately light wit as opposed to the former's straight-laced nature in the comics and the latter's colder, more cynical edge. It worked particularly well for Iron Man at first, whose comics version was not popular at the time due to the events of Civil War.
Despite this drastic change, the cinematic iterations made for compelling characters and became so popular that Marvel decided to change their comics counterparts' personas to match the film ones.
The comics tried to ape these icons' new personas, but the quirks were lost in translation. The Guardians in particular quickly became pale imitations of their cinematic selves, and characters such as Drax, Groot and Star-Lord became less capable across the board. Fortunately, the heroes were eventually allowed to act like their original selves after some backlash.
