10 Times Writers Hated The Movie Versions Of Their Work
9. Mary Poppins
Mary Poppins is such an iconic and successful film that many people forget it was even based on a book at all. In fact, the musical movie was based on a series of children's books written by P.L. Travers. Travers never wanted a movie version of her works, but Walt Disney's daughters adored the stories and he was determined to make it happen.
He originally tried buying the rights back in the late 1930s but had to wait until 1961 for Travers to finally relent. She would later regret that decision. The author demanded script approval rights and wanted to be an adviser to the production, and Disney obliged. However, when production actually got going, Travers realised she actually had little control over how the movie was going to be made.
She complained and objected to various things that still made it into the final cut. The animated sequence, in particular, was despised by the author but maintained by Disney. Travers wasn't even invited to the movie's premiere but managed to get a ticket and complained directly to Walt Disney, who simply ignored her and walked away. The troubled relationship between the pair was actually made into a movie of its own, Saving Mr. Banks.
