10 Times Writers Hated The Movie Versions Of Their Work
6. I Know What You Did Last Summer
The late Lois Duncan was a real pioneer in young adult fiction, specialising in horror and suspense stories. She also suffered a personal tragedy when her teenage daughter, Kaitlyn, was murdered in New Mexico. So, when her carefully crafted thriller I Know What You Did Last Summer was adapted into a simple slasher flick in which teenagers were brutally murdered one-by-one, it seemed pretty logical that Duncan wouldn't be best pleased.
She once recounted the time she first watched the film, wondering if she'd stepped into the wrong room at the cinema as the images on screen were so different from the words she'd written. It turned out that the movie producers only loosely took a few elements from Duncan's story and built a Scream-style slasher around them.
Duncan believed that the movie made a mockery of her novel and glamorised violence. She wasn't at all happy with the final product, but did at least thank the film's producers for helping to bring attention to her daughter's murder, which still has never been solved.
