10 Toho Kaiju Who Need To Appear In The MonsterVerse After Godzilla Vs. Kong
4. Hedorah
An alien life form that feeds on pollution, Hedorah made its
debut appearance in the 1971 film Godzilla vs. Hedorah. The kaiju is able to harness
the pollution produced by human industry in order to grow large in size and
become a more powerful foe. Eventually facing off against Godzilla at Mt. Fuji,
Hedorah is finally defeated and killed by the King of the Monsters along with
assistance from Japanese Self-Defense Force. The pollution kaiju returned once
again in 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars, under the control of the Xiliens.
A versatile foe, Hedorah grew through multiple stages throughout its debut film. Starting as nothing more than a tadpole-like creature, it grew through an aquatic form, a terrestrial form and an airborne form. Hedorah’s final form was more like a traditional kaiju, being a large upright bipedal creature. Its ability to use the pollution of the earth to feed and grow made it deadly, as it was also able to use this toxicity to attack and kill the people in its path.
The threat of pollution is still a very real threat to
humanity, even in 2020. The Godzilla franchise has always been at its core a
metaphor of the dangers humanity poses to itself. This is through Godzilla
himself, being an allegory for the dangers of nuclear war. Hedorah could be
introduced into the MonsterVerse as a product of human neglect, giving Godzilla
and the other titans the ability to save them from not just other, evil kaiju,
but from humanity itself.
