10 Trilogies That Actually Get Better With Each Movie
9. The Wolverine Trilogy
Following on from the early success of the X-Men movies, and the fact that Hugh Jackman's Wolverine easily stood out as the franchise's most popular character, it was only a matter of time before the mutant with the mysterious past was explored further in a solo spin-off.
Sadly, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was so bad that any and all other planned Origins spin-offs were cancelled. In spite of such a critical and commercial flop, though, the sheer popularity of the character allowed Fox another go.
The Wolverine focused on a present-day story, and with James Mangold on board to direct, the next chapter was an unmitigated improvement on the ill-advised prequel from four years earlier. However, there was still room for improvement, which Mangold achieved in immeasurable fashion with the outstanding Logan.
Adapting the Old Man Logan comic arc, Hugh Jackman's mutant was broken and beaten at the end of his road, allowing for a completely different type of story to be told. This was unlike any other comic book movie before it. Darker, grittier, and R-rated to boot, Logan gave Jackman's legendary hero the send-off he deserved.
