One of the earliest vampire films ever made, Dutch director Carl Dreyer's sinister 1934 masterpiece Vampyr is a object lesson in dreamy horror, loosely based on the stories of There's not too much to say about the plot except that a young man arrives in a mysterious French village only to discover that it's under the curse of a Vampyr who's being assisted by a less-than-ethical doctor. Other than that, the film's relatively light on story and big on ambiguous menace. Some characters appear only as shadows, one character is killed by flour suffocation and Dreyer's twist on the traditional vampire lore is that they must be killed with an iron bar through the heart. One of the most unique spins on the vampire story you're ever likely to see, it's also well worth checking out for fans of atmospheric filmmaking at its finest.
