10 Unreleased Movie Cuts We Want To See After The Snyder Cut
8. American History X: The Tony Kaye Cut
American History X scored enthusiastic reviews from critics, saw Edward Norton land an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and has endured as an often difficult to watch drama about some controversial subject matter that remains highly relevant over two decades later.
That being said, director Tony Kaye publicly disowned the movie after the studio ordered some changes in the editing room, and ended up taking out full-page ads blasting how he was treated, filed a $200m lawsuit against the Director's Guild of America and basically hit the self-destruct button on his entire career.
After all that, wouldn't it be interesting to see what all the fuss was about?
As he has a habit of doing, Norton himself became heavily involved in American History X's post-production, with New Line favoring the star's alterations, and they ultimately ended up releasing that version instead of Kaye's. The filmmaker described the process as a 'total abuse of creativity', so it would be fascinating to see if the addition of 25 minutes of footage and some tonal changes were really worth destroying his livelihood over.
