10 Upcoming Blockbusters That Could Massively Disappoint

8. Fantastic Four (June 19, 2015)

Tim Story's two Fantastic Four movies are hardly the pinnacle of the comic book genre, so its not like Josh Trank's upcoming reboot will be burdened by such lofty expectations. The director managed to blend two increasingly-overexposed genres, the superhero movie and the found-footage story, to great effect in his breakthrough feature Chronicle but it remains to be seen how he will fare with Marvel's most famous dysfunctional family, which is arguably one of the trickiest comic book properties to adapt. It will take a delicate balancing act to get The Fantastic Four right; treat it too lightly and it could come off as a camp farce reminiscent of Joel Schumacher's Batman, treat it too seriously and the sheer ridiculousness of the concept could result in unintentional hilarity. 20th Century Fox's last attempt at giving the characters the big screen treatment ended up being a little too cheesy and juvenile, and the poor reputation of the previous Fantastic Four movies could ultimately hurt the reboot's chances of success as it arrives in theaters only eight years after Rise of the Silver Surfer. It is also worth remembering that despite being hailed as one of the best up-and-coming directors in the industry, Josh Trank has still only helmed one feature-length movie, and that only had a budget of $12m and didn't involve the heavy-handed studio politics that Fox are renowned for. With principal photography now finished, surprisingly little set images have leaked but on paper at least, the movie does seem to be well-cast, filling the main roles with talented actors as opposed to big names. The worst thing the movie could do is take the origin story route, as The Amazing Spider-Man recently proved that retreading a familiar narrative in a superhero reboot after just ten years results in a mediocre blockbuster. The studio must have confidence in the project seeing as a sequel has already been announced for July 2017, but whether Trank will even return or not is up for debate given his recent attachment to a standalone Star Wars movie.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
