10 Upcoming Movie Reboots That Might Actually Work

It's absolutely understandable that many film fans complain about Hollywood being obsessed with sequels, remakes, reboots, and reimaginings, because it suggests an industry more keen to recycle successful ideas than roll the dice on something fresh and new.

And for sure, there are a ton of cynical, immediately offputting reboots in the works, such as Disney's upcoming Home Alone retooling and a new stab at Gremlins that nobody really asked for, to name just two.

But every so often a reboot will be announced that actually sounds...promising. Whether a result of the original franchise being a bit ropey or there clearly being a wealth of unmined stories left to be told, these announced reboot projects all have the potential to live up to or even exceed what came before.

With the talented filmmakers and actors attached, these films could put in a good word for the Hollywood reboot as a chance for a clean creative slate, to either overwrite disappointing prior results or simply offer up an alternate take on a recognisable name IP.

Though there aren't ever any guarantees, these reboots just might prove themselves worthwhile...

Hollywood has already given audiences three iterations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - the original '80s guys-in-suits live-action trilogy, the 2007 animated reboot, and then the mega-budget, Michael Bay-produced live-action/CGI blockbuster version.

With neither of the latter two versions capturing the pop-culture zeitgeist in the same way that the original trilogy did, it was only inevitable that Hollywood would once again announce a third reboot sooner or later.

In 2018 it was suggested that Bay would be producing another Turtles reboot, but this ended up going nowhere, and last summer it was confirmed that Seth Rogen is co-producing a new CGI animated film in conjunction with Nickelodeon.

The new project will be helmed by The Mitchells vs. the Machines co-director Jeff Rowe with a script penned by Neighbors co-writer Brendan O'Brien. Though casting hasn't yet been announced, a theatrical release date of August 11, 2023 has already been set.

It's easy to appreciate how Rogen's roots in manchild comedy could serve a Turtles reboot well, especially with the skilled likes of Rowe and O'Brien signed on in major creative roles.

In the very least, Rogen will probably be smart enough not to repeat the mistakes of Bay's films, namely having Mikey repeatedly creep on April O'Neil.

If Rogen and company get the tone right, this could be the first time Turtles has been a truly viable big-screen IP in three decades. Fingers crossed.
