7. The Driller Killer (1979) - From £0.01

This is a queer fish. Utterly unlike any other film in the list, Driller Killer is the first feature from a highly acclaimed director - Abel Ferrara (Ms. 45, King of New York, Bad Lieutenant, The Funeral). It is arty as well as being a damn good film (decent plot, well acted, competently filmed). Reno is a troubled man. A tortured artist, he has absolute bubkes to his name. He can't find a dime from anywhere. To add to his woes, a punk band start loud rehearsals in a nearby apartment. Driven psychotic, Reno purchases a drill and drills a bum through the chest. This is the first in a number of spree killings from the increasingly psychotic Reno. Carol his girlfriend announces she is leaving him for her ex-hubby Stephen. Unprepared to accept this turn of events, Reno sneaks into Stephen's house, gives him a drilling and a half while Carol is in the shower. He then gets into the bed and waits for Carol, who pops in uttering the words "Stephen, come here". Expect the unexpected Carol.. All in all, I like Driller Killer, it was an auspicious start to Ferrara's career - a clever study of urban decay and madness. A good use of a penny, if you can find it in your purse/wallet to spare.
