10 Video Nasties Fans Once Paid A Fortune For (That Now Cost 99p)

4. I Spit On Your Grave (Cut Version) (1978) - From £0.39

sit resized I Spit On Your Grave Is another bargain basement cheapo that is out there for your viewing pleasure, but is not available in the UK in the version integrale. This film is so harrowing you would have to look to another controversial rape-revenge movie Irreversible to match it in the brutality and hard to watch stakes. The first half hour/40 minutes or so consists of the protracted brutal gang rape and buggery of aspiring novelist Jennifer (Camille Keaton - Buster's niece) by four upstate New York yokels. It is simply excruciating to watch. After the savaging of the heroine we see her trying to come to terms with the aftermath. Jennifer finally decides upon a path of vengeance and goes to the church to ask for forgiveness. Using her feminine wiles, she lures the sick freaks to her and gets revenge. One is hanged, one gets castrated in the bath, one gets offed with an axe and the final creep is disembowelled by a motorboat engine. The worst death by far is watching the gang's ringleader get his genitalia chopped off in the bath. It will chill your marrow. I Spit On Your Grave garnered a very hostile critical reaction upon its release, with Roger Ebert going nearly apoplectic. Lately the movie has been reappraised as a sort of wild feminist guerrilla film (don't forget, its original title was Day of the Woman). Still requiring cuts on Blu Ray to attain an 18 certificate in the UK, you may as well buy it for 39p - after all, it is only cuts to the rape footage made. It doesn't impede the storyline.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
