Whether were talking about the original 1933 version or the most recent Peter Jackson rendition, the love story at the heart of King Kong has always been an odd one. After being torn from his home and bought to New York for the citys entertainment Kong breaks free and goes on the hunt for the only thing that seems to be important to him. A beautiful actress named Ann Darrow (played by Fay Wray in the original and Naomi Watts in the remake). Now, the original King Kong involved no emotional reciprocity; Ann was more or less a blond damsel in distress who was being menaced by the powerful, chest-pounding animal. In Peter Jackson's version, ape loves woman, and woman loves ape. And that's not weird at all right? Right? When the two do meet up then spend a lovely evening on the town. They go ice-skating and even climb the empire state building together. Too bad Kong is immediately shot dead when he reaches the top by a bunch of fighter pilots. Though, as they say, it wasn't the onslaught of bullets or the planes it was beauty killed the beast. Mans best friend may be the dog, but a womans best friend is apparently a giant ape.
