Aside from the shoddy script and the bizarre characterisations of fan favourites like Sabretooth and Deadpool (seriously, what were they thinking?), X-Men Origins: Wolverine is mostly remembered for its fake-looking CGI.

While this is apparent during the movies final battle, which looks as if it isn’t even trying to hide that it was shot on a soundstage, it is most noticeable during a particular scene in a bathroom. In the narrative, Wolverine is taking refuge in a barnyard and is just getting use to his new claws. What ensues is truly baffling.

There really is no sugar-coating it: Wolverine’s claws look absolutely terrible in almost every way. The lighting is completely off, making the claws appear as if they’re floating above Hugh Jackman’s hands rather than coming out of them. It also doesn’t help that they look like they have no weight or substance.

Many wondered why the claws in previous X-Men moves looked so much better, despite being created on older technology. The answer is actually rather simple. The claws in the previous movies, and in the later entries, are practical in certain shots, with CGI only being used when it was needed.

The problem was that the practical claws had many health and safety issues as they were designed to look as convincing as possible, and as such, are incredibly sharp. So for Origins, they decided to try and mitigate any accidents by going fully CG, to truly awful results.
