10 Wrestlers Who Starred In Sci-Fi Movies
1. Jesse Ventura
Jesse 'The Body' Ventura doubled as a wrestler and a colour commentator for the WWF in the early '80s, and despite not seeing a whole load of championships in his career, established himself as one of the most recognisable names in the industry. As with a lot of names on this list, that tends to lend itself to a pretty terrible sci-fi leading role along the way.
After some tag team success with Adrian Adonis, which saw the pair hold the American Wrestling Promotion's World Tag Team Championship for nearly a year, the two moved to WWF together. After splitting from Adonis, Ventura enjoyed a singles run which included several shots at Bob Backlund's World Heavyweight Championship. In September 1984, the former Navy UDT was forced to retire from in-ring action after blood clots in his lungs put a stop to 'The Body' (pun very much intended). Going into the '90s, it seemed Ventura could make a permanent switch to the acting sector but if you watch the sci-fi film Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe, you may see why that didn't happen...
Released in 1991, the Damian Lee movie stars Ventura as Abraxas, an intergalactic lawman chasing after an extra-terrestrial villain set on destroying the universe. The question is why Jesse Ventura was the man chosen to save the world. The film also chooses to have a human woman give birth to the villain's monstrous and powerful child, not something you see every day. The film may share a name with one of the most popular film series' of this decade but it certainly doesn't share quality, scoring just 2.8/10 on IMDb. For a low-budget, corny sci-fi with Jesse Ventura as the lead, it's... watchable?
