11 Awesome 2015 Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween
8. The Final Girls
A meta horror film with some real edge and substance to it, The Final Girls sees Max (Taissa Farmiga) and her buddies trapped within the classic 80s slasher flick in which her now-deceased mother (Malin Akerman) starred. As the film's hilariously cheesy tropes begin to unfold, the gang must find a way to both survive and escape this nightmare. Director Todd Strauss-Schulson has a perfect handle on his film's tone, fleeting from mockery of the horror genre (namely the terrible tradition of female characters being little more than sex objects) to fashioning an unexpectedly potent emotional arc for Max, who is still bewildered by the loss of her mother and struggling to let go. It's hilarious and heartfelt, with a brilliantly enthusiastic cast to boot, but there's one major issue holding it back: that damn PG-13 rating. How can any movie aptly satirise the very hard-R horrors of the 80s without showing any gore or boobs?
