11 Movies Too Big To Fail (That Did Anyway)
4. Treasure Planet
Another example of a time when Disney simply failed to hit the mark, Treasure Planet was their 2002 take on the literary classic Treasure Island, originally published in 1883.
Given that Treasure Island had already seen a number of adaptations, Disney decided to put a sci-fi twist on the story, giving them the opportunity to introduce a cute alien sidekick as well as take a handful of liberties with the source material.
The resulting movie was genuinely beautiful, and has plenty of charm to speak of, and in spite of an impressive marketing campaign involving CD-ROMs included in cereal boxes containing child-friendly PC games as well as the more traditional forms of advertising, Treasure Planet just didn't perform well.
Pitted against Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Die Another Day at the box office, it underperformed financially and Disney took a loss of approximately $80 million.
As an added nail in Treasure Planet's coffin, it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and lost out to Spirited Away.
Maybe Treasure Planet's failure was simply due to bad timing, but Disney's massive loss on the movie cements its place on this list.
