11 Unexpected Actors Who Might Win Oscars In 2019

4. Jude Law - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

Fantastic Beasts The Crimes Of Grindelwald Jude Law Dumbledore
Warner Bros.

The Role: A young-ish version of legendary wizard Albus Dumbledore, who is stationed at Hogwarts as he attempts to help Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) repel the evil dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).

Why He Might Win: Everyone loves Dumbledore, and Jude Law looks absolutely magnificent in the role, so why couldn't he pull a Robert De Niro in The Godfather Part II, by winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing a younger iteration of a beloved, statuesque character?

The supporting categories are also far more amenable to blockbuster fare such as this, and as it would be Law's third nomination over the last 20 years, perhaps the Academy might feel like he's waited long enough.

Why It's Unexpected: At the end of the day, this is still a silly fantasy tentpole franchise, and as great as Law probably will be in the movie, a lot of awards voters simply can't bring themselves to vote for performances that aren't seen as traditionally "serious" or "worthy" enough,

After all, would Heath Ledger have won the very same Oscar for his performance as The Joker were he still alive? As painful as it is to admit, probably not.
