In February 2012, Lucasfilm released Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in 3D, and it tanked. Completely. Although those who did see it were treated to a pair of 3D glasses in the style of Anakin's podracer goggles, so it wasn't all bad. This came as the first of their planned six annual re-releases of the existing Star Wars films, so right about now we would have been treated to Revenge Of The Sith and wishing 2015 would come sooner so we could get back to the originals. However, as soon as Disney took over, they canned the 3D plans, wanting to focus only on rebooting the franchise (rather than rehashing it). But that doesn't mean that they won't go back to it after the next batch of Episodes, alternating with character-specific spin-offs, and, like Pixar, complete their set. 3D may not be for everyone, but the Star Wars films would look great, and if anyone likes technological advances it's sci-fi fans. And if anyone goes back to re-do old films, it's George Lucas (who, although no longer in charge of Lucasfilm, still has a say in what happens). Is it actually likely? Who knows? Disney is so ridiculously forward-planning (reportedly planning all the Marvel films up to 2015 before Iron Man was released, and now having them contracted up to 2021) that someone over there probably does, but unfortunately that's not public information right now.
I'm a British filmmaker (or, at least, trying to be) and about to graduate with a Film Studies degree. Most of the time I should spend working is actually on Netflix so I obviously have loads of life experience to share with you lovely people.
