12 Awesome Performances That Saved Underwhelming Films

9. Kenneth Branagh - Murder On The Orient Express

2017's Murder on the Orient Express was a bit of a disappointment overall. It's watchable, but there's something flat about the entire affair. It's also tonally inconsistent - as foreshadowed by the bizarre use of Imagine Dragons in the trailer - and most of its amazing cast is wasted.

For example, it was surreal seeing Judi Dench and Olivia Colman only getting one proper scene and doing virtually nothing, given that they are 2 of Britain's finest actresses. Most disappointingly of all, Daisy Ridley isn't given a chance to do anything in her first major role outside of Star Wars.

Johnny Depp is impossible to take seriously as a murderous gangster, and no other actor is given enough screen-time to affect the film's quality much. Luckily, there's director and star Kenneth Branagh.

He doesn't look like Hercule Poirot and he didn't seem like a right fit for the part, but what do you know? He's great. Branagh is hammy, funny and human in the role, and is one of the best portrayals of Poirot to date. His performance adds flair and humor to proceedings, which was desperately needed. Since everyone else was wasted, without such a great Poirot the film would've belly flopped in a very embarassing manner.
