Though it might have made a lot of sense that Marvel would only do a deal with Sony for Spider-Man if it was good for them in the long-term, it seems that might be something of a wrong-headed assumption.

According to Amy Pascal - who was at Sony when the deal was cut with Kevin Feige and Marvel (despite the uncertainty of their bosses) - Spidey might actually leave the MCU entirely after the already announced Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

She spoke to CosmicBookNews at CinemaCon to reveal that Sony might ultimately decide to keep the character for themselves at that point:

“One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don’t have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often. In fact it may never happen again, after we do the sequel. Because Sony, and Disney, and Marvel all decided that the right thing to do was to allow Peter Parker and Spider-Man to be in the MCU and to work with the Marvel guys and have them produce this film. And I think that was a very rare thing for three companies to do, and a very brilliant thing for them to decide to do because there are only so many stories that you can tell again and again and again about Spidey, and this is something that we would have never been able to do in any other way. So it was a very selfless thing that very smart on the part of all the companies.”

Admittedly, this might simply mean that Sony will then look to renegotiate, but with the plans for spin-offs under Sony and a whole new Spidey universe counter to the MCU, there might be legs in the suggestion that Spidey might go back to being exclusively a Sony property sooner than previously thought.
