12 Classic Movies That Got Away With Problematic Scenes

3. The Deranged Seduction - The Notebook

‘Go out with me or I’ll kill myself’ apparently only sounds charming when you’re Ryan Gosling.

The Notebook is a classic romantic movie, based on the Nicolas Sparks novel and crucial in establishing the careers of both Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, who ended up dating after filming. It’s not for everyone but it’s extremely sweet and one of the best in its genre.

Its very sugary and very cliched, but it hits all the right notes for a tearjerker. No one would argue it’s a great film, but considering the target audience, it delivers on expectations perfectly.

Undeniably though, the opening scene were Allie agrees to go out with Noah is very, very creepy.

Gosling’s Noah sees McAdams’ Allie and decides, as love affairs often start, that he must have her. Who cares that she’s on a date already? That bozo’s not the main character, Noah is.

He chases Allie but she still won’t say yes, so he grabs the Ferris wheel she’s on and rides the bars to the top. Once he’s in front of her, we’re back to ‘go out with me or I’ll kill myself’.

It’s supposed to be charming and daring, but instead it’s manipulative and deranged.
