6. The Predator - Predator (1987)
It doesn't speak and for 99 per cent of the film you can't even see its face. Does that make the Predator any less scary? Absolutely not, in fact quite the opposite.
It's the element of the unknown that makes this extraterrestrial creature so menacing. A hunter in every sense of the word, and well over seven feet tall, it stalks and kills its way through Arnold Schwarzenegger's mercenaries through the film, coming at them from every direction. You really feel like there is no way out when you're up again the creature - it's more advanced on every level, and up until the climax of the film, continues to have the upper hand, while remaining hell bent on killing humans.
It was also a great move on the studio's part to have Schwarzenegger as the focus of the marketing, so that the creature itself wasn't revealed until people saw the movie, giving them a real dive into the unknown. It's a shame that the sequels have had a more mixed reception compared to this classic.
