12 Movies In 2018 That Were Unfairly Hated
5. Outlaw King
The hate train for David Mackenzie's historical epic actually started over two months before it was even released on Netflix, thanks to a "disastrous" premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Mackenzie's film was torn asunder for its bloated pacing and overlong run-time.
However, before the film made it to streaming, Mackenzie went back into the editing room and cut almost 20 minutes from it, which according to IndieWire's David Ehrlich - one of the few critics to view both cuts of the film - transformed it from an "interminable" piece of filmmaking into "a significantly different experience, and a better one in every way."
Unfortunate a good deal of damage was already done to the movie's critical rep, and post-Netflix its Tomatometer score has since risen to an OK-ish 63%.
Needless to say, without the toxic cloud of a flop premiere, Outlaw King's general reception would certainly be a little more encouraging, because it's a brilliantly acted, hellaciously bloody, gorgeously shot slice of history.
As viewers, the movie's pre-release handicapping is nevertheless an insightful look at the process of assembling a film and how, no matter how much a director believes in their vision, sometimes they need to see it play with a packed house to truly get a sense for it.
Rest assured, Outlaw King is well worth your time, even if it's currently rocking a (slightly) lower Tomatometer score than Aquaman.
