12 Movies You Wrongly Thought Bombed In 2018
4. Overboard

Budget: $12 million
Box Office: $91.2 million
Props to the producers behind this (admittedly terrible) remake of the 1987 Kurt Russell/Goldie Dawn comedy "classic", because they sure knew what they were doing when they cast Eugenio Derbez in a gender-swapped version of Goldie Hawn's rich a**hole role.
If Overboard tells us anything, it's that you should never, ever ignore the Latin American market at the box office, because when they want to, they will come out in droves.
Derbez is a major draw for the Latino demographic, evidenced by the film grossing almost 30% of its box office in Mexico alone, not to ignore strong performances in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru also.
Given the atrocious reviews, poor marketing and the fact the film came and went without a trace, you'd be forgiven for assuming it similarly ghosted at the box office, but alas, its final multiplier was a staggering 7.6x.
As for how the budget was kept so low? It's probably safe to assume that Derbez opted to bet on himself and take a chunk of the box office in lieu of a single upfront paycheck, in which case the gamble clearly paid off.
