12 Sci-Fi Movies Plagued By Reshoots

8. Alien 3

The Invasion Daniel Craig
20th century Fox

After Alien and Aliens redefined the science-fiction genre, anticipation was high for the third installment of the franchise. Thus begins one of the craziest Director v Studio stories in film history.

Before production have even started, Fox spent over $13 million on 10 different writers and multiple directors before finally settling on newcomer David Fincher.

The cameras rolled without a finished script, with many sequences needing to be reshot as a result. Fincher constantly clashed with the producers over which direction to take the movie in, with actor Charles Dance confirming in an interview years later that there were too many cooks in the kitchen. Eventually Fincher walked out after Fox demanded extensive reshoots, so the film was finished without him.

The Se7en and Fight Club director has disowned the film and rarely talks about it, but he did give one interview where he said this:

"I had to work on it for two years, got fired off it three times and I had to fight for every single thing. No one hated it more than me. To this day, no one hates it more than me".

Alien 3 isn't as terrible as everyone thinks it is but it definitely started the downward spiral for the rest of the franchise. An Assembly Cut of the movie was pieced together some years later, which is worth a watch as it does improve the quality a fair bit.
