12 Stars Wars Mysteries STILL Not Answered After Rise Of Skywalker

2. Was There Ever A Chosen One?

When any story brings in a prophecy predicting the appearance and importance of a Chosen One, it automatically frames the entire narrative around that character. It's why you use the trope in the first place, even if you end up deconstructing the trope and messing with expectations.

For decades, Star Wars was one of those stories, as we were introduced to the idea that Anakin Skywalker was the prophesised Chosen One who was going to bring balance to the Force. Turns out he wasn't, because he fell to the Dark Side (way to go prophecy) and even when he ended Palpatine, he didn't actually manage to do it because The Rise Of Skywalker undid that.

While it's not entirely the worst thing that the sequel trilogy didn't obsess about prophecies, we have to consider it as part of one long narrative and for such an important idea to just be dropped and never answered is jarring to say the least. To not even be told who gave the prophecy in the first place is also a pretty big unresolved issue.
