12 Underrated Recent Horror Movies You NEED To See

10. The Invitation

The Invitation
Drafthouse Films

Destroyer director Karyn Kusama is somehow the director behind 2005's Charlize Theron misfire Aeon Flux, though you would never guess by watching her more recent, stripped back genre flicks.

That said, it's probably just as well the film held back her Hollywood career as it gave us the low budget stunner The Invitation in 2015.

Tense, twisty, and terrifying, this self-contained horror tells the slow burn story of a man conflicted when his ex invites him to a pretentious dinner party which transpires to be an awkward sales pitch for a cultish collective...

Then turns into something far, far worse.

Filled with unforgettable images which contribute to a mounting, ineffable sense of unshakeable dread, this one will stick with you long after its slow start.
