Doctor Sleep was the answer to a question no one was really asking: What happened to Danny Torrance from The Shining when he was all grown up?

Decades after the novel (and iconic film based on it) came out, Stephen King released Doctor Sleep, a sequel in name only that followed a grown-up Torrance, now following in his father's footsteps as an alcoholic. His addiction mutes his powers, though they re-emerge and help the hospice worker aid dying patients. Somewhere along the line, the idea of "psychic vampires" that drain the powers of those with the "shine" is introduced, and the book introduces a young girl named Abra, a fellow psychic and target of the "True Knot" who are out to drain her.

The novel actually won the 2013 Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel, but really would have worked best if the ties to The Shining were cut out. In any case, Warner Bros. has optioned the movie for the big screen. And it appears to be moving forward, with director Mike Flanagan also charged with re-writing the screenplay originally penned by Akiva Goldsman.

It's not Flanagan's first dance with King, as he helmed 2017's Netflix exclusive Gerald's Game.
