For those not in the know David Lynch’s cult flop Dune is an epic sci-fi based on the book of the same name by writer Frank Herbert and stars a young Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides, the son of an intergalactic noble family who are battling for control of the planet Arrakis.

It’s weird as all get-out and features sandworms, a topless Sting and a powerful drug called melange or ‘the spice’ which expands users’ consciousness and allows for interstellar travel. If spice sounds suspiciously like a mushroom trip it’s because Frank Herbert based the fictional drug on his own dabbling with psilocybin mushrooms.

Despite the adult nature of drugs and Sting’s nipples, a series of activity books for kids were launched in conjunction with the film’s release in 1984 crammed with fun stuff to do like connect the dots puzzles and colouring in pages captioned with jolly little Dune-related phrases like “You must take the pain test to determine whether you are powerful enough to overcome fear itself” and “Blend the extinction of Paul Atreides into your recipe and you will come with a meal to our liking”.

There’s also instructions for a ‘No-Bake Spice Cookies’ recipe. Thankfully the ‘spice’ part of the recipe refers not to space drugs, synthetic cannabinoids or magic mushrooms but cinnamon. Still though, these books probably aren’t the ideal Christmas gift for impressionable sprogs.
