13 Best Movies From Otherwise Terrible Franchises
1. Jaws - Jaws Franchise
Other Films: Jaws 2, Jaws 3D and Jaws: The Revenge.
Jaws was the father of the summer blockbuster and it's arguable that, even now, it's still the best blockbuster ever made.
Aside from the fake-looking shark, Jaws gets virtually everything right. Its superbly-written script places three excellently-played and wonderfully developed characters in the centre of a nerve-shreddingly tense, ferociously exciting battle against the fearsome titular antagonist, making this a nearly-perfect adventure story on every level.
Still, the sequels really should be skipped. Jaws 2 is passable but it's nothing great and it often drags before its entertaining final showdown. Then, somehow, the next two sequels made Jaws 2 look like the original.
Jaws 3D is a toothless, cheesy stinker and Jaws: The Revenge is still widely - and deservedly - considered as one of the worst movies ever made. It's painfully dull, embarrassingly incompetent in every way, has one of the stupidest stories in horror history and doesn't even offer much unintentional hilarity.
Overall, Jaws is perhaps the epitome of a great film that has the misfortune of being attached to an otherwise dire film franchise. Still, these sequels in no way undermine Jaws' classic status.
