13 Bonkers Theories About 2016’s Movies That Surely Can’t Be True
4. The President Dies - London Has Fallen
The Theory: U.S. President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart) is killed during the spate of terrorist attacks in London, despite the efforts of resourceful Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler). Why It Could Be True: It would be a hugely ballsy surprise and a perfect way to one-up the previous film rather than simply repeating the same formula in another country. In addition, it would make for an interesting political statement, that a country is more than merely one man, and that killing the President is unfortunate but not damning, given the somewhat uncomfortable emphasis that some Americans in particular place on their figurehead. Plus, it gives the filmmakers a perfect out if Aaron Eckhart doesn't want to keep making these movies: just recast the President by killing off the previous one. Why It Probably Won't Be: Box office dollars will control this one: middle-America doesn't want to see "the leader of the free world" die, so there's not much feasible chance of this happening. We'll probably get a bunch of foreign leaders killed off (as the movie revolves around the world's figureheads attending the British Prime Minister's funeral) because they don't really matter for the intents and purposes of this story, but no, not the President of the good 'ol U.S. of A.
