13 Famous Movies You Had No Idea Were Based On Books

13. The Thing (1982)

the-thing_2It's Based On The Book... "Who Goes There?" By John W. Campbell Jr. The Thing looks and feels like a movie that doesn't want to be associate with literature in any way, shape or form, and that's mainly because it involves a scene where a man gets his hands bitten off by another man's stomach. And yet John Carpenter's paranoid sci-fi horror classic is based on a novella (like a novel, only lazier) called "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr., written all the way back in 1938. This novel has, of course, been adapted three times in all, though the latest adaptation, shot in 2011, served as a sort of prequel/remake hybrid. How Close Is It To The Book? Pretty darn close, though there's a scene in the book where the characters shoot down an albatross. I'm not telling you why, though, because that's your punishment for not having read this thing. Thing. Get it?
