13 Greatest Anti-Christianity Movies Ever
1. The Wicker Man (1973)
"Naturally! It's much too dangerous to jump through fire with your clothes on!"
Delightfully sinful, The Wicker Man is a true legend of cinema. It's not a film which tries to shock you with endless streams of gore or violence, it's a masterpiece of seeping dread and gradual realisations brought to life by Christopher Lee's exemplary performance as Lord Summerisle. Sgt. Howie could easily become an unlikeable character from the script alone, but Edward Woodward's brilliant portrayal of the character evokes a real feeling of sadness when his bleak fate finally begins to dawn on him. There are plenty of heretical stances to be found here, as well as some interesting comparisons between Christianity and the island's Pagan religion: the idea of parthenogenesis is rejected by Sgt. Howie as fake biology, while he accepts the highly questionable circumstances surrounding virgin birth of Jesus. The island's sacrifice of an innocent man is similar to the sacrifice required to cleanse original sin in Christian mythology and it could be argued that these events highlight the sheer horror of such a violent act for unrelated ills. Why should a deity be praised for requiring an appallingly needless murder when humans are quite rightly reviled for demanding the same act?Dishonourable Mention: The Wicker Man (2006)
"OH, NO! NOT THE BEES! NOT THE BEES! AAAAAHHHHH! OH, THEY'RE IN MY EYES! MY EYES! AAAAHHHHH! AAAAAGGHHH!"
The mere smite-free presence of this film is enough to disprove the existence of any sane gods. We can only imagine the lofty aspirations and dreams initially attached to this attempt when it was first vomited forth into the world, but what we've actually been left with is a painful jaunt featuring Mr Cage hijacking bicycles, maiming insects and brutally murdering a classic with all the grace and subtlety of a slovenly badger. It's almost as if someone, somewhere wanted to discredit sexual equality and competent script writi-- oh god, NOT THE BEES!! Any other delights you'd like to share?
