13 Long-Delayed Film Projects We Wish Would Get Made Already
3. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
Originally Announced: May 2010 Status: Dead. Plot Details: Centers on the story of Captain Nemo and his submarine Nautilus. Why Is It Dead? Two things: Disney and director David Fincher could not settle on a cast, especially after Brad Pitt turned down the lead role. Secondly, after the failure of John Carter and The Lone Ranger, Disney was especially cautious of making another highly-ambitious, expensive project. Yes, in a perfect world, David Fincher would be filming 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea right now... but this is not a perfect world. Instead, he's moved on to other things. His next film Gone Girl comes out in October and he's recently signed on to direct the Aaron Sorkin-penned Steve Jobs biopic. We are just going to have to face the facts, folks: 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea will never happen. If it were to be revived, it's unlikely Fincher would be involved. The film's script was written by Scott Z. Burns, who is known for penning the scripts to Steven Soderbergh's Contagion and Side Effects. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea was supposed to be a very ambitious undertaking, with Burns describing it to The Playlist last February as being a thematic mixture of "technology, commerce, and humanity." The idea of a Fincher movie taking place underwater, and being shot in 3D, sounds amazing. But our chances are very slim.
