When Loki's portal opened above New York (with a little assistance from Erik Selvig, of course), Tony Stark was the first to notice it. Without hesitation, and with no idea of what the beings were that were emerging from it, he headed towards it to tackle them head-on, having said "right.... army". Even though he was obviously wearing his armour at the time, the advanced beings who were pouring out of the portal en masse could well have possessed weaponry that would tear it to shreds with ease. The fact that he was prepared to tackle them head on without knowing anything about them was totally and utterly bad-ass and, luckily for him, he was more than capable of taking them on, as it turned out.
