14 So-Called ‘Must-See’ Films In 2014 (That Might Actually Be Worth Watching)
3. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Release Date: 11th July (US), 17th July (UK) Why Its A Must See: Its an area the franchise has never successfully explored. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, while also a sequel to the franchise reboot-prequel Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, is remaking Battle Of The Planet Of The Apes, the final entry in the original series and by far the worst film (and that includes Tim Burtons remake). Battle failed because of its low production values and future-changing plot, but the germ of its idea (a risen ape army and a weakened human one do battle) is a solid one. Replacing nuclear fallout with the virus from Rise and placing the events closer to our own time makes the story all the more relatable. Throw in Gary Oldman as the human leader and Andy Serkis returning under that groundbreaking CGI as ape revolutionist Caesar, and Dawn looks set to be another cracking entry in one of the longest running sci-fi series. Why You Should Be Worried: It could be another small step in a long franchise. Depending on your view Rise ended on a big cliffhanger or painfully open-ended. Either way, the ape rebellion hadn't really risen as the title suggested, instead proving for later battle. This time around we want to see the apes take massive steps towards domination, but theres the natural fear the franchise duties will keep events slow for maximum future films. Bottom Line: Hail Caesar.
