14 Upcoming Movies That Will Definitely Make You Cry

8. The Shape Of Water

The Shape Of Water
Fox Searchlight

Release Date: December 8

The Plot: In the early 1960s, mute janitor Elisa (Sally Hawkins) works in a government lab and comes into contact with a secret experiment, an amphibian creature (Doug Jones) housed inside a water tank. Soon enough, the two lonesome entities bond, and their lives are never the same again.

Why You'll Cry: After a few so-so efforts, this looks like a major return to form for Guillermo del Toro, who at his level best can deliver an absolute emotional smackdown, as he did in 2006's Pan's Labyrinth.

The Shape of Water has a lot going for it in this regard, from the incredible cast (including Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins and Michael Stuhlbarg in supporting roles) to Oscar-winner Alexandre Desplat providing the musical score.

Plus, cinema has shown time and time again how stories about the bond between an outcast human and alien creature can be tremendously moving, so make sure you bring all the tissues. If both characters actually survive the movie, it'll be a shock.
