15 Action Films From The 1980s You Must Watch
9. Lethal Weapon - 1987
Now chances are you probably know what a buddy cop film is. Two police officers with completely different ways of doing things must work together in order to solve a crime, or bring a criminal to justice. Well you may know the genre, but you surely have not seen the best it has to offer until you have seen Lethal Weapon.
Danny Glover plays Roger Murtaugh, a 50 year old veteran detective of the LAPD. He has been assigned a new partner, Martin Riggs, played by Mel Gibson, who is a former Green Beret soldier who lost his wife in a car accident three years prior and is taking his suicidal aggression out on his suspects. Although the two cops don’t see eye to eye at first, they slowly start to bond as they investigate a new case.
The dialogue and humour between Gibson and Glover is just as good as the fast paced and wild action sequences, and after making over $120 million from a budget of just $15 million, Lethal Weapon is remembered as one of the most successful buddy cop films of all time - one that only a few have come close to emulating.
