1. You Were Never Really Here

You Were Never Really Here is grim. Taxi Driver by way of Point Blank, Lynne Ramsay's poetic thriller eschews conventional plotting for striking, abstract imagery that accomplishes more than exposition and extended monologues ever could. At its core it's essentially the story of a gun-for-hire - an ex-army vet - assigned to rescue a politician's daughter from a child-sex ring.

As you can probably tell, it's absolutely no fun. Even the violence, the catharsis of seeing horrible people die in horrible ways, is mostly withheld from the audience, captured across fleeting CCTV cameras or cut just before a killing blow could ever be seen as glorified. The fact that catharsis never comes is the movie's biggest asset though, as you'll realise that you've spent pretty much the entire runtime without taking a single breath.

It's divisive for sure, but there'll be enough people out there ready to dig the hell out of Ramsay's brand of brutalism.
