Bringing together a vast cast and somehow switching between countless storylines with grace and panache, this massive blockbuster features fine ensemble work from the collected Avengers themselves as well as every Marvel actor you can shake a gauntlet at, with the huge scale of its ambitions somehow managing to feel effortlessly fresh and impressively kinetic throughout the absurdly long runtime.

That said, this is Robert Downey Junior’s film, and as a swansong for his beloved iteration of Iron Man, it’s a moving tribute to the actor’s talent and the easy charm he brought to a series which began with him, and could have ended early had he never donned the iconic suit since the scale of this unprecedented cinematic project could have dwarfed a lesser thespian.
