15 Best Sci-Fi Movie Sequels EVER

5. Spider-Man 2

Aliens Sigourney Weaver
Sony Pictures

Yes, the original is a classic, but it’s a corny and deeply noughties classic wherein Evil Dead II helmer Sam Raimi’s heightened comic book sensibilities ironically never gel perfectly with the over-the-top human drama on display as Peter Parker loses an uncle and gains a whole host of new responsibilities.

It’s not as bad as Marc Webb’s hipster skateboarding web slinger, but the first film’s angst and melodrama does pale in comparison to the Shakespearean heft Alfred Molina brings to his performance as this film’s Doc Oc.

Meanwhile, the amped up action results in some all-time great set pieces such as the still-impressive subway chase whilst teen idols Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst have settled into the more cartoon-y elements of their characters, resulting in a love story even more charmingly cheesy than its predecessor. Stellar work all round, Spidey.
