Some of the main criticisms levelled at Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel Prometheus were that it lacked the scares the original films boasted and featured barely any of the iconic chest-burster and face-hugger creatures the series has come to be known for. Thankfully the trailer for Alien: Covenant, kindly released on Christmas Day last year, promises all this and more.

Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace and Guy Pearce reprise their roles from Prometheus and are joined by cast newcomers including Danny McBride, Billy Crudup and Katherine Waterston who turns up looking awfully Ripley-like which is bound to refuel rumours that her character Daniels is none other than Ellen Ripley’s mum.

But better yet there’s tension, panic and enough gore teased to assure fans this will be a much scarier, bloodier outing than the last. Bonus points for scene creepy enough to put you off shower sex for life and a brief but terrifying glimpse of a full-grown Xenomorph.
